EuroWindoor Submits Position on Tebuconazole Renewal to ECHA

Frankfurt, February 2026 – EuroWindoor has submitted its official contribution to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) public consultation on the renewal of Tebuconazole as a Product Type 8 (wood preservative) under the Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No 528/2012.

In its submission, EuroWindoor emphasised the indispensable role of Tebuconazole for the European window and door industry. The substance plays an integral part in safeguarding timber joinery and profiles against decay, particularly from basidiomycete (rot) fungi. Through years of industrial experience, Tebuconazole has proven uniquely suited for this purpose, contributing to both the durability and performance of timber products.

Central Concerns Raised

EuroWindoor’s contribution highlights several concerns regarding the potential non-renewal of Tebuconazole.

Lack of viable alternatives: A thorough review reveals that options such as copper-azole, copper-quat, and copper-HDO do not deliver a comparable combination of efficacy, preservation duration, or suitability for industrial manufacturing. No currently available alternative offers the same balance of performance, process compatibility, and confidence in long-term service life for end users.

Minimised risk through professional application: Potential concerns regarding handling are effectively mitigated by the conditions under which Tebuconazole is used. In window and door production, application occurs in specialised, enclosed industrial environments operated by trained professionals with stringent safety measures in place. This ensures that both operator and environmental exposure remain negligible.

Wider implications: A non-renewal would compromise the competitiveness of wooden windows and doors, increase complexity in manufacturing, and challenge resource efficiency goals due to shorter product lifespans and potentially higher energy and carbon footprints from replacement materials.

EuroWindoor strongly recommends granting continued approval for PT8 uses, until proven, equally effective alternatives become available that support quality, innovation and sustainability objectives for European producers.
